Everybody knows that rhinos are being slaughtered by poachers. Now rhinos face a new enemy: coal mine companies. Right now, right at the border of the beautiful iMfolozi Wilderness Area a new open-cast coal mine is planned. Open-cast coal mining requires a substantial amount of water, and inevitably will cause widespread air, noise and water pollution.
Together with more than 100,000 of concerned citizens worldwide, we oppose the plan to establish this 20km long open-cast coal mine within metres of the unique iMfolozi Wilderness Area. It is an area of great historic significance and cannot be desecrated by a coal mine. We cannot allow this to happen.
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa. It is well-known for its biodiversity, rich wildlife and conservation efforts, as well as having the largest concentration of rhinos in the world. We believe it is our historic duty to stop this irresponsible plan to start a polluting coal mine operation right on the border of Africa’s oldest nature reserve.
We strongly oppose Ibutho Coal’s application to develop a coal mine right on the boundary of the world-renowned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. This proposed mine has the potential to generate severe and irreversible impacts on this incredibly valuable nature reserve and on the communities of the Fuleni area and we ask you to join the campaign to prevent this coal mine being established.
