SPAINS HALL ESTATE – School visits
Spains Hall Estate is home to the first beavers to return to Essex for over 400 years. The estate is pioneering an ambitious project, which aims to shift current land use over around 500 hectares. The aim of the project is to create a fully holistic example of Sustainable Land Management and climate mitigation aiming for carbon neutral in 2050.
Working collaboratively with the Wilderness Foundation UK, the estate aims to offer numerous opportunities around education and nature based, outdoor therapy. Through the collaboration we aim to connect the community and young people with an example of land management, which has been designed around sustainability and habitat creation.
The estate is a working farm that has the care of the environment, woodlands and wildlife at its heart. Alongside employing nature-based solutions for tackling flooding, they are in the process of creating one of the largest agroforestry systems in the UK, significant biodiversity gain, a holistic on-farm water management system and social enterprise hub.

Bonkers about Beavers (Yr2-Yr9, Age 6-13years)

We are now providing guided walking tours around Spains Hall Estates original beaver enclosure. Young people will learn about beavers and how they are ecosystem engineers, history of beaver reintroduction in UK and how they help to reduce flooding. Please note this is not a beaver watching tour and will take place on uneven, wet and potentially difficult terrain so are unsuitable for those with reduced mobility. Wellington boots and waterproof clothing are essential!
