Reception and Year 1 classes from Ford End Primary School visited the Chatham Green Project for an afternoon of bug collection, identification and then some bug art!
The group spent an afternoon in the glorious sunshine on the Chatham Green Project meadows using pooters and beating sheets collecting and identifying invertebrates (to order level!). The children were taught how to use the equipment correctly and how to identify their finds.
The group of 25 children managed to collect:

  • 46 Beetles
  • 13 Ants
  • 3 Flies
  • 21 Spiders
  • 1 Woodlouse

Well done! – The results will be used in our monitoring programme allowing us to monitor change throughout the years.
The children finished off their afternoon by making replica invertebrates from coloured pipe cleaners and different insect body parts made from card. Creations included: Butterflies (with flapping wings!), spiders (complete with webs!), ants and one or two new discoveries!
