The Wilderness Foundation UK (WFUK) is very excited to be partnering with Pyrgo Primary School to support their Science curriculum this term

WFUK and Pyrgo Primary have worked closely together to create a science programme that relates directly to the National Curriculum, utilizing outdoor space at Chatham Green to relate the studies to real world farming and nature. Between October and December, the whole school will visit Chatham Green and take part in the four hour bespoke session.
Year 6 just completed their visit, and spent two days with us studying living things and their habitats.   Morning activities included surveying the meadows for Signs of Autumn, followed by a Habitat Search where children identified four different habitats on the farm, described the conditions present and considered organisms that would live in them, as well as any adaptations they may have that makes it possible for them to live there.
After lunch, pupils engaged in a discussion exploring the Classification of Living Things – naming the five groupings and giving examples of each (Animals, Plants, Fungi, Bacteria and Amoeba).
This fed nicely into our final activity – exploration of Food Webs – particularly Farm Food Webs.   After exploring where energy comes from (Sun) where it goes to (Plants – Producers) and then Consumers (Primary – animals that eat plants and Secondary – animals that eat Animals) we looked at what happens to living things (everything dies) and the role that Decomposers play in this. Children made their own food web charts using organisms that might be on a farm.
We are looking forward to welcoming the rest of the students at Pyrgo Primary over the next few months!
