“More than half the world is now living in cities and we are yearning to reconnect with nature,” Jo Roberts, CEO of the Wilderness Foundation.

The Wilderness Foundation was recently approached by Suzy Graves of the Sunday Times to discuss the increasing need for people to connect with nature.    Suzy’s article was published in Style Magazine this week (30 December 2012) in support of the publication of  “Wild” by Cherryl Strayed – the memoir of a young woman, grieving the loss of her mother, who decides to hike 1,100 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, despite never having hiked before.  Wild is just one of a number of recently published books by authors who have all created beautifully written accounts of their encounters with nature.
“More than half the world is now living in cities and we are yearning to reconnect with nature.  Our response to these books reflects our longing to hear and answer the call of the wild,” Jo Roberts, CEO of the Wilderness Foundation.
The Wilderness Foundation runs “wilderness therapy” programmes for adults and young people to help reconnect them with the healing power of nature.    Wilderness Therapy is the antithesis of the static therapist’s couch, literally taking you on a physical as well as emotional journey, which has you “leaning into the chaos where there is no escape or denials.”
“Wilderness Journeys are non-cognitive, non-analytical ways to get back in touch with nature and reconnect with your own true self and physical senses that can get dulled in an urban environment.  You are stripped bare of the familiar masks you hide behind, so you can begin a radical healing process,” Jo says.  “Life in a wilderness trail is very simple.   In this complex world, this can be very appealing.”
